The Matiri area is situated at the southern end of the Kahurangi National Park, and its entrance is from Murchison. This is access to the Thousand Acre and Hundred Acre plateaux, which are dramatic, landscape features providing ample reward for those who make the effort to climb them. These plateaux hold an extraordinary diversity of native plants, over 37% of the native plants of North West Nelson.

This is a true wilderness experience, the track is rough and steep and the huts old and small, so it is only for those with some tramping experience and who don’t mind not having some of life’s luxuries.

It takes two days to get to the Larrikin Hut, which is the base for exploration of the area.
