Kahurangi Guided Walks specialises
in taking small groups into the Kahurangi and Abel Tasman National
Parks. Whether you are looking for a short walk through native forest
or alpine meadows, golden beaches or old gold mining areas, or a longer
tramp into more remote and untouched parts, we've got the walk for
you! We know the area well and have a passion for it. We are keen
to share its wildlife and natural history as well as the stories of
the original inhabitants, the Maori people with you.
Kahurangi Guided Walks operate under
a concession from the Department of Conservation. Our tour parties
are small, personal and unique to your requirements.
Walks in the Kahurangi and Abel Tasman are available all year round.
We have graded and timed them to help you choose the walk most suitable
for the time you have and your level of fitness.
Kahurangi National Park
Kahurangi is New Zealand's second largest National Park, created in
1996. It is an untouched wilderness area and includes the world-renowned
Heaphy and Wangapeka Tracks as well as many lesser known walking tracks
and routes used mainly by local people. Kahurangi is home to many
endemic plant species with the largest range of flora of any of the
New Zealand National Parks, hosting North Island and South Island
species. It is home to the endangered giant land snail, Powelliphanta,
and has a thriving population of Great Spotted Kiwi. In summer, the
higher mountains are home to a dazzling array of alpine plants.
Abel Tasman
The Abel Tasman is New Zealand’s smallest, sunniest, warmest,
friendliest National Park. It was created in 1942 to commemorate Abel
Tasman’s visit to the area in 1642, the first European to set
eyes on Aotearoa. The park contains three distinct areas; the coastal
margin is the most visited, with many beaches and estuaries, and many
huts and campsites; the inland area rises to 1100 metres with thick
bush, providing a wilderness experience; and the marble area of Canaan,
with many caves and the deepest hole (Harwood’s) in New Zealand.
We provide you with the opportunity to explore and enjoy these areas
in complete safety with a trained guide.
