Rawhiti, the Sunrise Cave

The 3 hour return walk to Rawhiti (sunrise) cave is through the spectacular gorge of the Dry River. The podocarp forest here is the best example of its kind near Takaka, with tree ferns, nikau palms, old Totara trees and much more.

The track zigzags up the hillside to one of the most magnificent cave entrances in New Zealand. The external 'tufa' stalactites are amazing.

The walk is slippery, so good walking shoes with grippy soles are essential. No children under 7, and children must be under close adult supervision at all times. We ask that you do not leave the designated areas.
