MT ARTHUR
Mount Arthur is one of the highest peaks within the Kahurangi National Park and has a peak elevation of 1,795 metres. It is made of hard, crystalline marble, transformed (hardened) from limestone, originally laid down under the sea some 450 million years ago. Below ground are some of the deepest shafts and most intricate cave systems in the country. We begin our walk at Flora Carpark, 800m above sea level. The track is well formed up to Mt Arthur Hut (4.2 km from the carpark) and the views over Tasman Bay are spectacular. From here, depending on the weather and the fitness level of the party, we can either continue up the mountain or some may prefer to take the shorter, circular route back down to Flora Hut before returning to the carpark.
